A sacred space
for felines

It was Miss Kitty who showed me the importance
of altars for cats. She would wrap herself
around the candles, statues and ceramic
birdhouse I had positioned there.
The night before her passing, she willed
her frail body, as if carried by spirit,
to lie beneath her sacred place. Her body
resonated with peace as she positioned
herself beneath the items that reminded
me of joy and the celebration of life.
After Miss Kitty's passing, I decided
to create a space like this for my other
cats. I selected items that represented
love: a Buddha cat, a St. Francis statue,
a meditating Jesus, a handmade cat angel,
and a tiny box containing some of Miss
Kitty's fur. Muncie appears to be drawn
to St. Francis, Harley often rubs the
cat angel with his nose, and Dharma pauses
while walking by.
This sacred space has had a profound effect.
The cats have become more loving and compassionate
towards one another and their playfulness
and joyfulness have noticeably increased.
