Featured Recipe

  • 1 pound turkey, beef or lamb, ground or cut in small chunks
  • ¼ ounce beef liver
  • 4 cups sweet potato, chopped (or use one of the following: 4 cups white potato, 2/3 cup whole brown rice or whole white rice, 1½ cups oatmeal, 2/3 cup pearled barley or barley flakes, or 2/3 cup quinoa)
  • ½ cup zucchini, chopped (or other green vegetable, such as green beans or broccoli)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 small red apple with skin, chopped (or ¼ cup other brightly colored fruits and berries, such as blueberries or cranberries)
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Sprinkle of turmeric
  • 4 cups filtered water

Combine all ingredients in a crock pot. Cover and cook on low for six to eight hours, or on high for three to four hours. If you don’t have a crock pot, simply combine all the ingredients in a big pot, bring to a gentle boil, then turn down to simmer for two to three hours, stirring from time to time so ingredients don’t stick to the bottom. This recipe makes one day’s food for a moderately active 50-pound dog. It provides approximately 1,200 calories, which includes about 30% protein, 40% carbohydrates and 30% fat.

The benefits of Barley:

Barley has been cultivated for over 10,000 years and is considered one of the world’s healthiest foods. It supports the intestines, stomach, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, thyroid, and the immune system. It’s an excellent source of fiber, and selenium, which has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells. As a co-factor of glutathione peroxidase, selenium also works alongside Vitamin E, to be cardio-protective and even lessen the signs of arthritis.
