Actress Jackie Moore is known for her film credits Student Bodies, Street Smart, Atlantic Rim, and upcoming feature, Pernicious, as well as her TV credits Gossip Girl and 30 Rock, but what you may not know is that she has a secret boyfriend named Sammy… her adorable rescue dog!
Jackie is a huge advocate of rescuing homeless dogs. She currently lives in Los Angeles, California which is one of the largest areas in California that sadly has the largest population of stray dogs; These dogs are then placed into shelters and euthanized.
Animal Wellness Magazine spoke to Jackie about her love of animals and how rescuing Sammy was one of the greatest and most rewarding things she has ever done…
AW: Explain to us why you love animals!
JM: Animals are amazing because they act solely on instinct. They are pure and honest and make the world a beautiful place.
AW: Did you grow up with any pets?
JM: Yes, we always had dogs at my house and I had hamsters, tropical fish, and lizards.
AW: Have you had to work on-set ever with any animals?
JM: Yes, I’ve worked with dogs and horses during photoshoots and I Ioved it.
AW: As a model, what are your thoughts on people wearing fur?
JM: I’m not a fan of it, and I think faux fur is a fine alternative.
AW: Why do you feel humans need animal companions and need to adopt/rescue animals?
JM: Pets teach us about commitment. Before I had my dog I was living for myself and now I have a living thing that depends on me and that has taught me so much. Even if you’re tired you’ve got to get up and take the dog out and if they are sick you have to take them to the vet. It has made me so much more responsible. I think people should adopt because there are SO many wonderful dogs sitting in shelters that need homes. All they want to do is give you unconditional love and you can’t put a price on that.
AW: You rescued your pet dog Sammy. Tell us a bit about him!
JM: Sammy is my angel. He was abandoned as a puppy and luckily I saw a post on Facebook at the right time and claimed him as soon as I could. I’ve had him since he was eight weeks old and he’s brought nothing but joy to my life. He is the sweetest dog, and loves to cuddle and play. I can’t imagine my life without Sammy.
AW: Why the name Sammy?
JM: When I was home in New Jersey last year for the holidays, my mom rescued a twelve year-old Shih Tzu that was brought to the vet to be put down. He had a name, but we wanted to change it, so I suggested Sammy. My sister and my mom were like “no, his name is going to be “Mickey”. For some reason I kept hearing the name Sammy and when I got back to LA a few weeks later I adopted my dog and finally got to use it. Not sure why it came to me, I think it was just his name all along.
AW: How do you feel about people who abuse their pets?
JM: I don’t understand how anyone can hurt an animal, they are innocent creatures that simply want love. Abuse is NEVER the answer and people that treat their pets this way don’t deserve to have them.
AW: If you could come back in your next life as one animal, what would it be and why?
JM: A tiger or dolphin. They are both such powerful and beautiful animals, and have always been my favorite.
AW: Any other animal/pet-related thoughts you want to leave us with?
JM: Adopting Sammy is one of the best things I’ve ever done and even though taking on that responsibilty was scary at first, it has made me a better person. If you’re searching for a pet PLEASE go to a shelter. There are so many animals that were unfairly abandoned or abused and you have the power to give them a second chance!
