Bobby Batson with his pets
Bobby Batson with his favorite dog and cat.

Bobby Batson is a 7-year-old actor who starred in the film, 90 Minutes in Heaven, alongside the likes of Hayden Christensen and Kate Bosworth. But, its what Bobby does with his movie earnings that is truly separating him from any other 7-year-old.

Bobby Batson, who has a cat and dog himself, donates a portion of his earned money to a no-kill animal rescue called Carpathia Paws… pretty remarkable for such a young child. Animal Wellness sat down with Bobby to learn more about his love of animals and growing career…

AW: Explain to us why you love animals in general?

BB: They are so sweet, loving and cuddling. They love me and I love them. I love the way they look in my eyes and tell me they love me.

AW: You have 1 cat and 1 dog… tell us more about them!

BB: I picked out Teddy Rascal (grey tabby) on my 4th birthday. A friend of my dads had a stray cat that had kittens. That was all I wanted for my birthday. I love him and he loves our family. Teddy is 3 and sleeps with me at night. Sunshine is my sister Maggie’s dog. She is a Miniature Schnauzer and 8 years old. We got her before I was born. My mom said we got her so that she would bark at strangers when my dad deployed. She fooled us. She is so sweet and NEVER barks. She has never met a stranger, just like me.

AW: Why do you feel everyone should own / rescue a pet for themselves?

BB: Pets are wonderful. They bring so much love to a family. I wish I could have 100 cats! We will be getting a new one soon. My dad’s cat, Frank just died about a month ago. We are all very sad.

AW: You also donate a portion of your earnings from films to Carpathia Paws… what does this organization mean to you and why did you decide to start donating to them?

BB: I want to help animals. My sister donates to the Humane Society so I wanted to help too. There is a Carpathia Paws close to us so that is why I picked them. I think it’s important to help out animals when I can. I’m only 7 so I can’t volunteer anywhere yet but I can donate money.

AW: How do you feel about people who abuse their pets or abuse animals in general?

BB: I think they are very mean. If you will hurt an animal then you are not a nice person. I don’t know how anyone can do that. I wish I could help all the animals in the world.

AW: If you could come back in your next life as one animal, what would it be and why?

BB: I would be a cat. They are great hunters and very smart. They are fast and great at jumping. I would be my dad’s cat. That is a lucky cat.

AW: What is the most important thing other young kids should know when living with a family pet?

BB: They are a lot of responsibility but very loving. You have to take care of them and show them lots of love. You have to be very gentle with all animals.

AW: Do you feel having pets helps your overall career and dealing with various situations?

BB: Yes, I know that it teaches me responsibility. I loved working with the puppy in 90 Minutes in Heaven and I hope I get to work with animals in future roles.

AW: Being the owner of both a cat and a dog, why do you think there is a war between the two types, and who usually wins the ‘battles for attention’ in your household?

BB: The cats always win the battles at my house. Teddy Rascal will jump up on the counters to get attention or on our laps while we watch TV. Sunshine sits at out feet. I know she wishes she could jump up too.
