Mixed breeds outrank labs and goldens in “most popular breed” report

Believe it or not, the most popular dog breed in Canada isn’t a breed at all! Mixed breeds have outranked goldens, labs and shepherds as the most desirable canines.

This summer, Rover.com released “Canada’s Most Popular Dog Breeds of 2020,” its second-annual report ranking the top 20 most popular dog breeds across the country. The first place winner? Mixed breeds!

Similar surveys were run in the US and UK, where both countries also selected mixed breed as the most preferred breed this year. See the full list below.

“As we’ve seen since the start of the pandemic, Canadians are adding to their pack by opening up their homes to new dogs,” says Toronto-based veterinarian Rebecca Greenstein. “Some Canadians seek out specific traits and breeds, while others are thrilled to adopt a mixed-breed rescue.  The magical reality is that each breed brings something special to the table, a whole lot of love.”
