12-year-old child star actor Evan Brinkman is about to blow up your screens this summer when he stars in Judd Apatow’s upcoming comedy, Trainwreck, alongside Amy Schumer. But his at-home life in Florida is filled with all types of lovable pets that help him be the grounded actor he is, even at his young age!
Animal Wellness spoke with Evan to find out more about all his family pets.
AW: Explain to us why you love animals in general?
EB: I find all the varieties of species in the animal kingdom simply amazing. I’m very concerned about the loss of habitat to some species and I hope that something can be done to stop their extinction.
AW: You have two cats and one dog. Tell us more about them!
EB: Our two cats were stray kittens. Xiao Xiao is 7 years old and we got him when he was about 3 weeks old. He was living under someone’s front porch. He only weighed 14 ounces so we named him after the Chinese meaning of small, Xiao Xiao. Calvin is our other black cat and he was born in our garage last year. His mom was a stray cat and we took her in right before she gave birth to a litter of kittens. She had four kittens and Calvin was the runt of the litter. He was so small we didn’t think he would make it but he thrived and has an incredible and feisty personality. My mom was able to find loving homes for the momma cat and the remaining 3 kittens. I’m happy to say they were also spayed and neutered. Comet is 5 years old and we think he is a Cockapoo. He needed a home around Christmas time so we named him after one of Santa’s reindeer.
AW: Why do you feel everyone should own / rescue a pet for themselves?
EB: Every pet deserves a chance at a loving home and that pet will add more love and happiness to your life.
AW: How do you feel about people who abuse their pets?
EB: It makes me feel sick and they are obviously mentally deranged.
AW: If you could come back in your next life as one animal, what would it be and why?
EB: I would be a Bald Eagle because it is a symbol of the USA and it is a majestic animal. It would be incredible to have the freedom to soar through the sky.
AW: What is the most important thing other young kids should know when living with a family pet?
EB: Pets have feelings and they need a committed family to give them the care and love they deserve.
AW: Do you feel having pets helps your overall career and dealing with various situations?
EB: Absolutely. I can always get unconditional love from any of my pets when I feel I need some companionship. Also, my pets have taught me responsibility and accountability.
